Alice Walker

Alice Walker is African-American novelist, short story writer, and poet. She was born February 9, 1944 in Eatonton, Georgia. Ms. Walker is most known for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the novel entitled The Color Purple. She was the eighth child of sharecroppers. When Ms. Walker was eight-years-old her brother accidentally shot her in her right eye with a BB gun. As a result, she became blind in her right eye since then. Her interest in literature started in her senior year in high school. She married a Jewish Civil Rights activist/lawyer, Mel Leventhal, and she had a child from him. Some of her others famous pieces of literature include The Temple of My Familiar and Possessing the Secret of Joy. Currently, she’s still alive and active in environmental issues, economic justice, and feminist causes.
